MiniMax H3 and H3 Max reference-to-video share a multimodal reference workflow, but H3 Max adds useful frame-boundary controls and has a different resolution contract. Choose by the constraints your shot requires, then compare a defined brief. The “Max” label alone does not establish the right output mode.
This guide covers the reference-to-video operations available on Raywake on 19 October 2026. Text-to-video, image-to-video and other H3 tools are separate operations and may expose different settings.
The controls that change the decision
| Control | H3 Reference | H3 Max Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Image, video and audio references | Supported | Supported |
| Combined reference-file cap | Twelve | Twelve |
| Image-reference cap | Nine | Nine |
| Video and audio references | Up to three of each, within combined cap | Up to three of each, within combined cap |
| Explicit first and last images | Not exposed in reviewed operation | Exposed |
| Timed middle-image guidance | Not exposed | Exposed under specific conditions |
| Resolution choices | 480P, 768P, 2K, 4K | 480P, 768P, 1080P |

Native, upscaled and refined output are different
The reviewed H3 contract describes 480P and 768P as native modes, with 2K and 4K upscaling a 768P base. H3 Max describes native 480P and 768P, with 1080P latent refinement from a native 768P source.
Do not collapse those options into one “maximum resolution” ranking. A larger delivered file and a different generation process are separate facts. Decide whether the asset needs a larger export, additional detail or simply a stable composition.
Inspect the file at delivery size and in relevant crops. Upscaling cannot be assumed to restore an incorrect product shape, fix a wrong letter or make a missed action happen. Resolve the creative issue before paying for a larger result.
When are first, middle and last frames useful?
H3 Max Reference exposes an opening image and a closing image. Its middle-image control requires those boundary images, a time strictly inside the requested duration and native 480P or 768P output. The timing is rounded to the nearest frame at 24 frames per second.
That can help define a deliberate transition. For example, an object begins on the left, passes through a specified midpoint and ends in an approved hero composition. Use compatible lighting, object proportions and perspective across the frames so the transition has a plausible path.
A middle frame is not simply another identity reference. It specifies a desired moment in the timeline. If your goal is only to keep a character recognizable, a smaller identity-reference set may be the clearer input.
Keep the reference order meaningful
The reviewed H3 Max operation also offers an ordered reference list whose cross-media order is meaningful. It should not be combined with the separate reference arrays in the same request. Choose one documented representation rather than sending duplicate descriptions of the same files.
For the ordinary image, video and audio arrays, state each item's role in the prompt. One image can establish the character, a video can establish motion and audio can provide context. Keep the combined-file limit in view: the individual maximums cannot all be filled simultaneously.
On Raywake, open H3 Reference or H3 Max Reference and inspect the current inputs before preparing a batch.
Duration and budget need separate checks
The base H3 reference operation accepts integer durations from five to fifteen seconds. H3 Max's reviewed duration field accepts a different range and notes that output can run about 0.7 seconds longer than requested. A requested duration and the delivered file's exact runtime should therefore be recorded separately.
Use the quote for the chosen payload and record the settled charge after completion. For an edit that must fit an exact advertising slot, inspect and trim the delivered media as needed. Do not rely solely on the request field as proof of final runtime.
The video cost guide explains reservations and settlement. The frame-control comparison helps decide whether a boundary-driven shot is the right workflow.
Common questions
Does 4K in H3 mean native 4K generation?
Not in the reviewed reference contract. It describes a 768P base followed by upscaling.
Can I use middle-frame guidance with any output size?
No. The reviewed H3 Max control requires native 480P or 768P and the appropriate first and last images.
Is this a quality or speed benchmark?
No. It compares documented controls. A matched test with your own source material is needed to measure acceptance rate and latency for your workload.
